Bridging science and society: The journey of TANG Zhinan from chemistry to consumer innovation

The vibrant colours of chemical reactions and the intricate dance of molecules once captivated Tang Zhinan, appearing to her as the most enchanting form of "magic". Today, as a graduate of the Master of Science in Chemical Sciences programme at the National University of Singapore (NUS), she has moved beyond the laboratory to the global stage of Procter & Gamble (P&G), where she applies her scientific expertise to safeguard the well-being of millions of consumers worldwide.

Zhinan's passion for chemistry was first ignited in her high school laboratory. "Chemistry bridges the macro and the micro—it helps us understand how the world truly operates," she recalled. "Those mesmerising experiments weren't just reactions; they were keys to unlocking the mysteries of nature."

Her enthusiasm for hands-on experimentation quickly translated into significant achievements during her undergraduate studies. Zhinan won the Innovation and Design Competition Award at her university and later earned a Bronze Medal at the 7th China International "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for her project, "Automatic Antiviral Disinfection Detergent". The competition revealed to her the process of translating scientific research into real-world applications. "Writing business plans, creating pitch decks, waiting for judges' feedback—it was so different from lab work," she said. Her curiosity and drive earned her the title of University Outstanding Graduate, marking a perfect conclusion to her undergraduate chapter.

Her experience in the 311 Programme at NUSRI Suzhou marked a pivotal stage in her development. "It served as a bridge," she reflected, "connecting the rigorous theoretical training I had received with the global, discussion-driven pedagogy of NUS." Working on collaborative projects within cross-cultural teams further strengthened her communication skills and adaptability—qualities that later enabled her to excel in Singapore's diverse, international environment.

When it came time to plan her career, Zhinan forged her own path. While many of her peers pursued research, she saw untapped potential at the intersection of chemistry and consumer innovation. "A background in chemistry holds tremendous value in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, especially in R&D," she shared. "P&G is renowned for its exceptional company culture and is widely recognised as an accelerator for professional growth. It provides a challenging yet supportive environment where employees are entrusted with significant responsibility early on." Singapore's well-established work culture, high quality of life, and overall well-being further reaffirmed her decision to begin her professional journey here.

Now working as a Cosmetic Regulatory Manager at P&G, Zhinan finds her role both challenging and fulfilling. Her "battlefield" lies within the vast and intricate world of global cosmetics regulations. Ensuring that every raw material, formula, label, package and finished product is both safe and compliant across markets is her mission. "At first glance, chemistry and cosmetics regulation seem unrelated, but they're deeply interconnected. Cosmetics are essentially fine chemical products. My chemistry background helps me better identify potential risks." Modern cosmetic regulatory demands the integration of science and law. From toxicology to clinical testing, Zhinan's technical foundation enables her to navigate complex assessment and collaborate effectively with regulators worldwide.

With solid scientific expertise, cross-disciplinary thinking, and a global perspective, Zhinan embodies how passion, when met with opportunity, can create an extraordinary journey. Her story continues to unfold in vibrant Singapore, serving as an inspiration for students to pursue their curiosity beyond boundaries.
