Innovation Centre for Biomedical Engineering

Innovation Centre for Biomedical Engineering
To strengthen biomedical research and applications, the Institute newly launched the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (BME Research Centre), which is focused on digital medicine, diagnostic equipment, medical robots, and phototherapy. Leveraging on the research capability and expertise of NUS BME Department, the Centre is directed by A/Prof QIU Anqi, and it carries out both R&D and 311 educational programmes at NUSRI-SZ.

Research Interests and Programmes

Digital medicine: to set up bioimaging database and search engine; to develop mathematical models and advanced algorithms for image processing, recognition, and analysis; to collect multi-modal images and extract biomedical and clinical information on brain neural structures and functionalities; to apply digital medicine in the treatment of brain neural diseases such as Alzheimer’s diseases;

Medical robots: to conduct R&D on surgical robots, solving key technical problems on the design and control of elastic force actuator, and recognition of human motion intention, etc.; to develop exoskeleton rehabilitation robots for patients;

Diagnostic equipment: to develop high resolution, high accuracy, high depth, and 3D bioimaging equipment based on near-infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively;

Phototherapy: to deliver phototherapy devices and systems based on up-conversion nanomaterials. When the devices are implanted in human body, and exposed to infrared light, visible light would be generated by the devices to treat diseases in the tissue.
